It seems that everywhere you go, you hear the word "gospel." It seems to be used interchangeably for many different things. Mark 13:10 says, "And the gospel must first be published among all nations." So what is the gospel - is there an easy way to explain it?
Actually, yes - there is. "Gospel" means "good news," and the good news is that Jesus Christ came to earth, and atoned for all of mankind to save us from the effects of death and sin.
According to Dieter F. Uchtdorf, "The gospel is the good news of Christ. It is the revelation that the Son of God came to earth, lived a perfect life, atoned for our sins, and conquered death. It is the plan of salvation, the way of hope and joy, and the assurance that God has a plan of redemption for His children."
I can't imagine what this world would be like without a knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The gospel gives hope in the midst of hard times, and reminds us that there is more than our own small lives on the line. The God of the universe knows who we are, and cares so much about us that he sent his son to the earth to save us, and make it possible for us to return to live with him once again. The gospel is, indeed, good news!
